ENEMY THRUST
HALTED AT SOME POINTS. POSITION IN NORTHERN AREAS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) . LONDON, August 17. The Stockholm correspondent of "The Times” says: "The Germans are still hammering at the Russian positions on the lower Kuban River near Krasnodar, and they have been brought to a standstill at Cherkesk. “The Russian aggression in the Voronezh, Bryansk, Viazma and Rzhev areas is apparently making it more difficult for the Germans to withdraw troops for use in the other sectors, where the attack is slowing up.” The Russians have continued to advance round Voronezh, where German attempts to retake strategic lines are unavailing, reports “The Times” Moscow correspondent.
Prodigious Russian activity is reported from Baku. Old men and women and youths are working in the oilfields factories throughout the day and night to step up production. Very strict fuel economy has been ordered throughout the Soviet Union.
