OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
A SUGGESTED POSTPONEMENT (To the Editor.) Sir, —The ratepayers of Masterton have now received their rate notices, accompanied by the intimation that rates must be paid by September 7 if discount is to be allowed. To my personal knowledge, many ratepayers are in the throes of earthquake damage restoration, which has already cost them a lot of money and ultimately will cost them much more. In the circumstances, it would be a great relief to many of these harassed individuals if the council were to extend the discount date for two or three months to give them, a chance to meet this added expenditure. Otherwise many will have loss of rate discount added to their heavy earthquake expenses. —I am, etc., RATEPAYER. Masterton, August 17. The Town Clerk, Mr G. T. O’Hara Smith, states that' discount on rates is only allowable by statute before the expiration of 30 days after the due date of the rate demand. Legislation would be necessary to extend the discount elate.
