OBITUARY

MR GEORGE ARTHUR WARD. The death occurred yesterday of Mr George Arthur Ward, of 5 Wrigley Street, Miasterton, a well-known resident of the town. The late Mr Ward, who was born at Poplar, England, 89 years ago, was a sailor in his younger days and came to New Zealand in 1873. Leaving the sea, he took up farming on the Upper Plain in association with his brother, Mr John Ward. Three years later he gave up farming and for a period of 30 years was employed by Messrs C. E. Daniell Ltd. as a signwriter, painter and paperhanger. • He was the last survivor of three corporals who went to Parihaka, during the Maori War, the others being Corporals Dalrymple and Groves.. In his younger days the late Mi’ Ward took a keen interest in sport and was a prominent supporter of the Red Star Football Club, being particularly noted for his excellent work in connection with the club’s social gatherings and dances forty-five to fifty years ago. He was also keenly interested in cricket and acted as an umpire in later years. A widow and one daughter, Mrs William Darvill (Masterton) are left to mourn their loss, besides twin brothers, Messrs John Ward (Masterton) and Robert Ward (Staines, England). The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving the Chapel of Hyde’s Funeral Service Ltd., following a service at 3 p.m. for the Masterton Cemetery. ! MRS GEORGE SHAW. The many friends of Mrs Grace Shaw, wife of Mr George Shaw, of Te Ore Ore, will regret to hear of her death, which occurred yesterday. ’ The late Mrs Shaw was born in Dunedin in 1865, the eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs T. M. Brown. She later came to the North Island with her parents and had resided here ever since. She took a great interest in the Masterton Harrier Club and the hospitality of both Mr and Mrs Shaw was known far and wide to members of harrier clubs and others. Besides her husband, Mrs Shaw is survived by three sons, Messrs Francis, Eric and lan Shaw, and one daughter, Mrs H. D. Harvey (Havelock North). One son, lan, is serving with the forces overseas. Miss E. Brown (Te Ore Ore) is a sister. The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving the Lansdowne Presbyterian Church, following a service at 4 p.m., for the Masterton Cemetery. MRS E. BETTE-RIDGE. The death occurred yesterday of Mrs Eleanor Betteridge, of 4 Casel Street, Masterton. The late Mrs Betteridge was born in. England and had resided in Masterton for the past 20 years. She was a member of the Park Croquet Club and was secretary for some years. Her husband predeceased her 40 years ago. She is survived by one son, Mr D. L. Betteridge, of Kapuni, Taranaki.

The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving the chapel of Hyde’s Funeral Service, Ltd., following a service at 11 a.m. for the Masterton Cemetery.
