CARTERTON
PATRIOTIC DANCE A LARGE ATTENDANCE. (“Times-Age” Special.) There were over 400 dancers present at the weekly dance held by the Carterton and Y.M.C.A. Patriotic Committee on Saturday night and a most enjoyable time was spent to music provided by the combined orchestras of Messrs T. Udy (Carterton) and Frank Pool (Masterton). Two much-appreci-ated extras were contributed by soldiers. The M.C. was Mr L. M. Clark.
A lucky spot fox-trot was won by Miss J. Breckell and Pte. Waterfield, and a lucky spot one step by Miss V. Irwin and Pte. Summers.
Members of the Carterton Girls’ Club were in charge of the supper arrangements.
Personal Items. First Lieutenant Rex Lawrence has returned to New Zealand on leave, and is staying with his father, Mr J. A. B. Lawrence.
Pte. lan Mackie, who was with 'the forces in the Middle East, returned to New Zealand recently and is at present staying in Carterton. Mrs Emma Fairbrother, relict of Mr Geo. A. Fairbrother, formerly Mayor of Carterton, died at Palmerston North yesterday at the age of 83 years. Four sons survive' her. They are Messrs Findlay, Victor, Eustace and Trevor Fairbrother. A daughter, Mrs Fowler, of Waipukurau, pre-deceased her some years ago. Mrs E. Benge, of Carterton, left today for Wanganui, where she will take up army duties. Mr W. B. Allen, of West Taratahi, a very old settler of the district, will be 95 years of age on Wednesday next. Mi’ Henry Goodin, of Horsham Downs Hamilton, recently had the misfortune to have a leg broken, as the result of a kick from a cow. He is an inmate of the Waikato Hospital. Mr Goodin formerly resided in Carterton for many years. Mrs B. H. Goodin, of Hamilton, was a visitor to Carterton yesterday. She will Igave for Featherston tomorrow, where' her father, Mr S. Murphy, is seriously ill. , , Mr Russell, who was formerly headmaster at the Dalefield School, died at Raetihi recently. Lieutenant - Commander Hard mg, who has been on a visit to his parents at Carterton, recently returned to New Zealand from England where he has been for nearly two and a half years. He was one of the first R.N.V.R. officers called up for service at the outbreak of the war, and was given command of one of H.M. mine-sweepers in June, 1940. As the result of enemy action in November, 1940, he suffered a broken leg and severe head wounds.
Those who contributed items to the programme at the concert given to the armed forces on Thursday night vreie Misses Verna Irwin, Mary Lawrence, Ava Sorensen, Mesdames A .Hordish and K. Hodder, and Messrs Rooney, M. Stretton, and W. Thomas. Football. The Carterton B grade fifteen met a Greytown team at Carrington Park on Saturday and won by a penalty goal, to nil. Mr L. Berry was referee.
