MALTA CONVOY
GIVEN SPLENDID AIR PROTECTION 1 FIGHTERS FROM ISLAND BASES. ALOFT FROM DAWN TO DUSK. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 11.40 a.m.) RUGBY, August 16. Axis aircraft attacking the Mediterranean convoy on its last lap to Malta, suffered severely at the hands of the R.A.F. Thirteen enemy planes were shot down into the*sea, states a Cairo message. On Thursday, when the main convoy came into harbour, the R.A.F. shot down seven planes, having already destroyed six approaching the island. The success of the air operations cannot be judged solely by the number of enemy planes destroyed. For the past few days the R.A.F. has been busy giving support to Malta and by reconnaissance has kept a close watch over shipping. As soon as the convoy came within fighter range of the island, Spitfires took off from the first light to dusk. The protection of the convoy at this stage was due to R.A.F. fighters’ complete superiority and to superb air planning and organisation of flying and ground crews.
