DARK & CLOUDY

DURING ATTACK ON WESTERN GERMANY ENEMY NIGHT FIGHTER DESTROYED. DAMAGED BOMBER GETS HOME SAFELY. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 12.10 p.m.) RUGBY, August 16. Though there were clouds to hide much of Western Germany last night, some R.A.F. crews were able to find gaps, through which they could see familiar landmarks and pinpoint their objectives. The crews who were not fortunate enough to find gaps came down below the cloud layers in search of their targets. It was a dark night and several fighters were sent up to help the defence. A Wellington bomber was attacked twice and destroyed one Junkers 88, and, although severely damaged itself, managed to reach home safely.
