Reappointments to the Opticians’ Board are announced in last night’s Gazette. They are: Dr G. W. Harty, Mr T. G. Young and Mr H. S. Gilberd. Mrs J. E. Ashley-Jones, wife of the Rev J. E. Ashley-Jones, vicar of St Anne’s, Northland, died on Wednesday night. She was born in Wimbledon, London, 69 years ago.
Sergeant lan Paine, who has died of wounds overseas was an old boy of Marlborough College and was popular and well-known in sporting circles, having been a Marlborough representative Rugby football player for many seasons. He also represented Marlborough in tennis and cricket. Sergeant Paine was a nephew of Mr and Mrs I. I McGregor, of Masterton. Mr Vern Haughland, staff correspondent of the Associated Press _of America was yesterday listed as missing five days after the plane in which he was a passenger disappeared in a storm between north-eastern Australia and New Guinea, a Melbourne cablegram states. Mr Haugland left the United States in January with other war correspondents for this, theatre.
The death occurred in Wellington on Tuesday of Sergeant-Major A. Bark, who served in the New Zealand I orces from 1912 till his retirement in 1940. In August, 1914. he was seconded for duty with the Samoan advance force of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Returning to the Dominion in 1915, he remained here till February, ’ 1917, when he was posted to the N.Z.E.F. and served in France. He came back to New Zealand in September, 1919, and, till he retired in 1940, he was in the main actively attached to the 10th Heavy Regiment. The funeral of fhe late Miss Mary Buddington, which took place in Masterton yesterday, was largely attended. The service at St Matthew’s Parish Hall and that at the cemetery were conducted by the Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich, assisted by the Rev H. Taepa. Many beautiful wreaths testified to the respect in which the late Miss Boddington was held. Wreaths were sent, besides others, from the following: Directors of Masterton Permanent Building Society, Women’s National Welfare League, Board .of Governors, Wairarapa College; staff of Wairarapa College, Messrs Sellar & Sellar and Hallenstein Bros., Ltd. and staff. The pall-bearers were Messrs E. W. Payton, S. R. Gawith, A. P. Bennett and R. V/. Roydhouse.
