A frost of 4 degrees was registered in Masterton this morning
Gifts to Sedgeley Home. The matron of Sedgeley Home acknowledges with thanks the receipt of the following gifts during July:— Cakes, Mesdames N. James, Moser, Trevor Beetham, W. H. Edwards, P. Borthwick, Misses E. Booth and E. Gray (East Taratahi); jam, Mrs A. P. Southey; fish, Mr F. H. Dunderdale; beef, Mr W. F. McLaren; clothing, Mrs A. H. Atack; oatmeal, games and entertainment at pictures, Mr H. Reid.. Demolition Work.
Good progress is being made with the demolitipn of the parapet on the Masterton Municipal Buildings. Altogether 120 tons of masonry is being removed from this building. A start has also been made to remove the dangerous facade on the Bank of New Zealand building. The heavy parapet and front on the building occupied by Modern Furnishers is being taken down and workmen are now engaged in boarding up the front of Messrs Hugo and Shearer’s building, where the facade has also been demolished.
Well Provided For. The Canadian merchant seamen is well provided for. Pensions are granted in case of loss of life or disability, provision is made fox - the continuation of his pay in case of detention resultant from capture or internment in a foreign country, and provision is likewise made for the payment of compensation for loss of effects as a result of enemy action. The many services are calculated not only to provide for his dependent's but also to prevent any financial worries. Canadian Pure Magnesia.
The first production in the Gatineau country of pure magnesia is announced by the Aluminium Company of Canada, Limited, with the opening of the company’s new magnesia plant north of Ottawa. “The first run is entirely satisfactory,” said the manager of the new plant. “This magnesia is a highly important war material and is made from Canadian raw materials. Extensive deposits of brucitic limestone in the Gatineau Valley are being used as the ore for the high grade magnesia, which will be produced now in substantial tonnage.”
