Soldier Killed. A soldier, Colin Ernest Graham, aged 20, was killed by the accidental discharge of a rifle at a battle station near Auckland yesterday afternoon. A man, aged 28, Maurice Oliver Braddock, fell from the fifth story window of a building in Elliott Street, Auckland, on Tuesday, and died on the way to hospital. He was not known to the staff in the building. He had been an inmate of an Auckland hospital for some weeks. His wife and child live at Grey Lynn. Air Shelter Tunnel. Tunnellers this afternoon fired the shot which finally pierced a tunnel 2000 feet long under Albert Park, Auckland, extending from Victoria Street to Constitution Hill. The Mayor, Mr Allum, and the city engineer, Mr Tyler, shook hands through the final opening. The tunnel and side tunnels will provide air-raid accommodation for 20,000 people in the heart of the city. Subversive Charge. A charge of having in his possession for the purpose of publication two subversive documents was made in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, against Harold William Klein, , clerk in the headquarters office at a military camp for the s.past 12 months. He pleaded not guilty, and was committed td the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was granted by Mr Stout, S.M., for £100; and Klein was allowed to return to duty at camp. A charge of stealing seven stencils to which he also pleaded not guilty, was deferred till after the hearing of the major case. Taking Notes in Court. During the hearing of a case in the Dunedin Magistrates’ Court in which a woman was charged with being a member of a subversive organisation, Sergeant M. Conway, who conducted the case for the prosecution, drew attention to the fact that a man at the back of the Court was taking notes. “What objection can the police have to a man taking notes?” asked counsel for accused, Mi’ C. J. L. White. He is quite entitled to do so if he wants to.” Sergeant Conway pointed out that according to Press reports a magistrate in Christchurch some time ago laid it down that only authorised persons were permitted to take notes of Court proceedings. Mr White interrupted to say that the Christchurch magistrate quickly changed his opinion on the subject. In reply to Sergeant Conway the magistrate, Mr Bundle, said that as long as they were not creating a disturbance persons in Court could take notes of any case in which they were interested.
