The Admiralty announces that the aircraft-carrier Eagle was sunk as the result of a U-boat attack in the Mediterranean. At least one U-boat operating in the.same area ; as the Eagle has already been sunk. It was later announced that there are 930 survivors from the Eagle, including Captain L. Mackintosh, 67 officers and 862 other ratings. H.M.S. Eagle was a ship of 22,600 tons, completed in 1924. She had a speed of 24 iftiots. The Eagle was originally designed as a battleship for the Chilean Navy before the last war. In 1917 she was purchased by Great Britain and was finally completed as a carrier in 1924. She took part in the attack on the Italian Fleet at Taranto in November, 1940.
