CANTON BLASTED

SMASHING AMERICAN ATTACK MUCH DAMAGE IN DOCK & OTHER AREAS. DESTRUCTION OF ENEMY PLANES. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) CHUNGKING, August 11. American aircraft in a. bigscale raid, dumped tons of bombs on enemy military objectives at Canton. They blasted docks and warehouses along the Pearl River, scored direct hits on a Japanese aerodrome, and probably destroyed 15 bombers parked on the field. The Chungking correspondent of the United Press of America says this attack was designed to cripple a big striking force which the Japanese have been building up to attack the United States Air Force. The American bombers also blasted Japanese installations, barracks, aerodrome runways and hangars, and railway stations at Nanchang and Yochow. The Americans shot down three Japanese planes attempting interception in the vicinity of Nanchang. The United Press correspondent expresses the opinion that these attacks on Japanese bases along a 600-mile front from Hankow to Canton were undoubtedly partially designed as a diversion to prevent the Japanese from rushing aerial reinforcements to the Solomons.
