POSTHUMOUS AWARD

TO AMERICAN INDIAN AIR HERO

(Special Australian Correspondent.)

SYDNEY, August 12.

Sergeant Ralph Sam, a full-blooded Indian and hero of a recent Allied dive-bombing raid who continued to fire on attacking 'Zeros with his revolver after his right hand had been shot away,, has been posthumously awarded the American Silver Star for bravery. The loss of his hand made it impossible for him to handle the bomber’s guns. Sergeant Sam received severe wounds and lost much blood. He died a few days later.
