WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

SOLWAY-M ANAI A. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Solway-Manaia Women’s Institute celebrated its 7th birthday on Thursday. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Nelson, Foster, Geo. Allen, Kilgour, Sinclair, McGovern, Leighton, Taylforth, Cotton and Miss Cotton. The following are the points prize winners for the year:—Flowers, Mrs Munn; most entries, Mrs Munn; cooking, Mrs Woollett; sewing, Mrs Dornan. The potato competition was won by Mrs McAllister with 26Hbs. During the afternoon a presentation was made to Mrs Henderson in appreciation of her services while secretary. A presentation was also made to Mrs Dornan, who was married recently.

A baby’s money box was presented to Mrs Kilgour. The following members of the committee received shoulder sprays:—Mesdames Diamond, Woollett, Henderson, Scrivener, Webber, Church, Dornan, McGovern, Munn, Thompson and Groombridge.

A musical competition arranged by Mrs Groombridge was greatly enjoyed, the winner being Mrs Diamond. Mrs Speight rendered three solos, which were much appreciated. She was presented with a posy. A play-reading was acted by Mesdames Webber, Woollett, Thompson, Church and Scrivener.

Afternoon tea was served. The birthday cake was made by a member. The programme for September will be: Cooking apple, fruit cake, best collection of spring flowers, best bloom, and a button-hole to be made during the meeting. The hostesses for September will be Mesdames Sims, Sutherland, Senr., Sinclair and Barnes.
