ARMIES IN EGYPT
BOTH SIDES REINFORCING WITH MEN & MATERIAL. AUCHINLECK’S PROGRAMME GAINING MOMENTUM. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.5 p.m.) LONDON, August 6. The Germans, like the Eighth Army, are replacing lost material and reinforcing as speedily as possible, says a Cairo message. Italian forces are arriving in Tripoli from Southern Italy and the Germans are bringing reinforcements by boat, barge and plane over from Crete by the Tobruk route. The Germans are steadily building up tank strength. Barges are carrying tanks and petrol as far as possible along the coast to forward positions. Rommel has issued an order of the day reading: “Dig in and mine with additional protective screens of artillery and anti-tank guns.” The German anti-tank guns arc mostly 50-millimetre pieces. General Auchinleck's replacement and reinforcement programme is gaining momentum. There has been a satisfactory increase in the number of mobile six-pounders, which are a better defensive weapon than the 50-milli-metre guns of the Germans.
