S.M. COURT SITTING LIQUOR AT DANCE HALL. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly sitting of the Carterton S.M. Court held yesterday was presided over by Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M. Alfred George Featherston and Percy Sydney Mansfield, were charged that on June 27 they attended a dance at the State Theatre and had liquor in their possession. Both pleaded guilty and were each fined £2 with costs 10s. A. E. Ansell (Transport Department) proceeded against A. M. August (Mr D. Taverner) on a charge that on March 25 he carried on a goods service between Wellington and Masterton contrary to the terms of the licence issued under the Transport Licencing Act, 1931. The magistrate said that a technical breach had been committed and imposed a fine of £2 with costs. Mildred Mary Campbell (Mr D. Taverner) was charged by the Transport Officer, Mr A. E. Ansell, that on May 11 she exceeded a speed limit of pu miles per hour in the borough of Carterton. A plea of guilty was entered and accused fined £2 with costs. The Traffic Officer proceeded against W. H. Judd for a similar offence and a fine of £2 with costs 10s, was im-“ posed.
Collecting Rubber. The Carterton Secondary School children are doing excellent work in collecting rubber for war purposes, and up to last weekend had got together over 2 cwt., mostly hot water bottles, milking machine rubber and cycle tires.'
Regent Picture Theatre. The contractor, Mr R. Vincent, Wellington, who is to carry out repairs to the Regent Picture Theatre, will tomorrow commence the work which it is expected will take six weeks or two months to complete. ' Patriotic Dance. For the purpose of raising funds for patriotic purposes the residents of Belvedere and Carrington will hold a dance in the Belvedere School tomorrow night. Boy Scouts. The weekly card tourney of the Boy ■Scout Committee was held in the Band Room last evening. There was a large attendance and the prizes were won as follows:—Ladies: Mrs W. Miller, 1; Mrs K. Hodder, 2. Men: Pte. Carter, 1; Mr W. Morris, 2. E.P.S. Meeting. Mr D. L. Taverner presided over a meeting of the Carterton E.P.S. last evening. There were also present: Messrs P. L. Beere, S. Hill, J. Steel, E. T. Beaven, A. R. Pankhurst, W. Candy, J. F. Williams, E. McKenzie, Geo. Brown, E. T. Bliss, J. A. B. Lawrence, Mrs E. Ordish and Miss O. W. Wolters. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Candy, seconded by Mr Pankhurst, that appeals be lodged with the Man Power Committee for all key men in the medical unit, who have completed 18 months’ service and have obtained their certificates. It was decided that wardens be requested in an emergency to report in regard to broken electric wires. The secretary’s action in lodging appeals for members of the E.P.S. against serving with the armed forces was endorsed. Gathering Postponed. Owing to a bereavement suffered by Mrs R. Gallon, the Matarawa-Dale-field Women’s Institute’s “Husbands’ Night” has been postponed. Entering Military Service. Mr Gordon Udy is entering military service and intends to relinquish his business in Carterton. He expresses appreciation of the support he had ieceived in business during the past eight years. Personal Items. Lance Corporal F. L. Hopkins, who saw service overseas, has returned to New Zealand and is on leave,
