U-BOAT HORDES
CLAIMS BV ADMIRAL DOENITZ TACTICS AGAINST UNITED i STATES. CONVOY SYSTEM ALLEGEDLY WELCOMED. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.10 p.m.) STOCKHOLM, August 2. Admiral Doenitz, U-boat chief, interviewed by the “Svenska Dagbladet,” declared that contrary to the general opinion, fighting in American waters was not simple. The Americans had rapidly created a defence which inspired respect and also inspired a positive conclusion on the fighting spirit of American crews. “It is our intention to meet the new American defences with new hordes of U-boats,” Admiral Doenitz said: “British and American leaders lack ideas. Our wolf-pack tactics are successful. U-boat commanders are actually pleased that the enemy has introduced the convoy system.” Admiral Doenitz ridiculed stories of bases in neutral territory and also the use of mother ships. “The secret of the long-range U-boats,” he said, “is the sacrifice of comfort for range and fighting qualities. The R.A.F. bombardments of U-boat bases in 1940 could have been unpleasant, but the U-boats are now operating from absolutely bomb-proof concrete sheds.”
ACTION IN CANADA NEW TYPE OF CONVOY VESSELGIVING GOOD RESULTS. 4 (Received This Day, 12.10 p.m.) MONTREAL, August 2. A correspondent of the Canadian Press aboard a Canadian warship says a heavy concentration of anti-submar-ine ships is now operating and waging relentless warfare against U-boats, which already have sunk five merchantmen in these waters. The Canadian Navy is using a new secret Bangor class of vessels successfully in these operations. Although details cannot be revealed, it can be said that the Bangors are first-class convoy vessels, filled with the latest equipment, designed specifically for such work. The high manoeuvrebility, speed and offensive power of the ships has already been proven under combat conditions. The men who sail the Bangors unanimously praise them and predict that when the full story is told the Bangors will outshine the famous Canadian corvettes.
