SYNTHETIC RUBBER
AGREEMENT WITH INVENTOR IN U.S.A. HOPES OF BIG ADDITIONAL SUPPLY. 600,000 TONS THIS YEAR. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.55 p.m.) NEW YORK, August 2. The “Daily News” Washington correspondent reports that the War Production Board has entered into an agreement with Mr Ogene Houdry, the inventor of the Houdry process for making Buna synthetic rubber. Under the terms of the agreement Mr Houdry will produce 600,000 tons of rubber 'during the next twelve months. This is twice as much as it was previously estimated could be produced befoie 1944. Mr Houdry claims that he can produce this vast amount without using large supplies of vital materials, such as steel and copper, since batadicne, the basic metal for Buna rubber, is obtainable from petroleum in the existing natural gas plants, many of which are now idle in the southwest of the United States.
