STATE THEATRE
“RISE AND SHINE.”
Bright comedy, with a strong lacing of satire, makes fine entertainment in “Rise and Shine,” which will be shown tonight at the State Theate. American fanaticism for their brand of football has often been the subject of good-natured humour, but less frequently is it made a butt in a film. Jack Oakie, muscular and sleepy football star, is the saviour of his college, but the big problem is to get him through the big scholastic examin-ation-difficult questions like who was Columbus or what runs on a railway line —so that he will not be debarred from football. It is all very refreshingfun, and there is dancing and singing to add spice. Linda Darnell is the charming “interest” for George Murphy, that excellent tapdancer. Oakie is too sleepy for love. Walter Brennan is as amusing as ever as the grandfather whose aged eyes are not dim to a pretty ankle. Milton Berle, Rita Donnelly and Donald Meek make up a worthwhile cast. “Rise and Shine” has music, too. A number that is likely to be given an airing wherever young New Zealand dances is “I’m Making a Play for You.” The associate picture is the excellent drama, “We’re Going to be RichL”
