DAY COMING
FOR SOVIET COUNTERSTROKE ACCORDING TO MOSCOW COMMENTATOR. SAYS GERMAN WAR MACHINE WILL BE SMASHED. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, July 30. Major-General Zhuralev, •the Moscow military commentator, reviewing the Don River battle, said: “The day is approaching when the Red Army’s troops will deliver a counter-blow. The German army is still capable of short-lived successes on separate sections of the front, but we are certain the Ger-, man war machine is driving to its > own destruction and will inevitably be smashed.” The “Daily Mail,” pointing out that Marshal Timoshenko has not once attempted a serious counter-offensive but has kept his forces together while falling back on his reserves, says that it is certain that a counter-blow will be delivered. The result will depend on the strength of the Russian reserves of men and material. Most momentous issues turn on the events of the next few days. According to the Stockholm correspondent of “The Times,” the Germans flew several foreign journalists to Rostov last weekend. One correspondent reported that the German soldiers do not regard Marshal Timoshenko as having been routed or that the German progress henceforth will be easier, but are convinced they will be obliged to spend another winter serving in Russia. KILLED IN ACTION PRINCE WILLIAM OF HESSE. LONDON, July 30. The Rome radio announced that Prince William of Hesse, the husband of Princess Marianne of Prussia, was killed in action on the Russian front. The Prince was aged 37 and commanded a German infantry regiment.
