BUILDING REGULATIONS

BOROUGHS GIVEN WIDER POWERS. EARTHQUAKE DAMAGED BUILDINGS. Wider powers are given borough councils in the Wairarapa and in other parts of the Wellington district, according to regulations published in this week’s Gazette, in relation to the repnir of earthquake-dciinaged buildings. Permits may be granted for the erection and maintenance of temporary structures and for the execution of temporary repairs but such permits are not to be issued for a longer period than the duration of the present war and one year thereafter. On the expiration of the period owners are liable, at their own expense, to. demolish and remove temporary structures when required to do so by the local authority concerned. The period of permits issued for temporary repairs is subject to yearly review and may be terminated at any time if deemed desirable by the local authority. On the expiration of the temporary permit, owners are liable, at their own expense, to comply entirely with the provisions relating to the erection of permanent structures, which state that councils and their examining officers are to be guided in their decisions by the lessons learned from recent earthquakes and the accepted principles of design and construction to resist earthquake shocks.
