PIONEER ROAD

FROM MEXICO TO CANAL ZONE FINANCED BY UNITED STATES. BY-PASSING THE U-BOATS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.15 a.m.) WASHINGTON, July 27. The State Department announced that the United States is financing the construction of a 625-mile pioneer road from the southern Mexican border to Panama, which will enable the carriage of goods and supplies by land tc the Canal Zone and to Central America, thereby avoiding the submarine menace. The roadway will also serve as a guide for the completion of the Central American link of the permanent Inter-American highway, of which a thousand miles have already been completed. Six Central American republics are co-operating in the emergency road building, supplying much labour, materials and equipment.
