Soldier Dies From Injuries.
Found lying on the railway line a mile north of Portland, Auckland, on Saturday night, Gunner Walter Young, 18, son of Mrs Margaret Blake, of Portland, was taken to the Whangarei Hospital, where he died from severe head injuries. When the 6.20 p.m. goods train from Whangarei arrived at Portland, the engine-driver noticed some sugar on the front of the engine. With the fireman he went back along the line toward Whangarei, and found Gunner Young lying unconscious beside the track. Near him was a wrecked railway jigger which appeared to have been travelling in the same direction as the. train in the darkness. Central School Dance. An enjoyable old time dance was held by the Central School Parents’ Association in the school assembly hall on Saturday night. The orchestral stage was tastefully decorated with large bowls of spring flowers, most of which were obtained from the school gardens. The music was supplied by Barnes’s Orchestra, extras being played by Lieut. Coddington and Mr H. Hood. Mr W. R. Nicol acted as M.C. The winners of the Monte Carlo were Mr and Mrs Smith. Supper was served by members of the ladies’ committee under the supervision of Mrs E. C. Cod-] dington. 1
