SERIOUS POSITION
FACING WAIRARAPA COLLEGE LOSS OF TEACHERS TO ARMED FORCES. APPEAL TO THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION. The serious position in which the Wairarapa College is placed owing to an acute shortage of teachers was discussed by the Board of Governors at a special meeting held last night. After the matter had been fully considered, the following resolution was carried unanimously:— “This Board of Governors, after yielding many teachers to the military without protest, views with dismay the dismissal of its application, for the return from camp of a special teacher. The shortage of teachers is so serious for the pupils that we ask the Minister of Education to take action to return this member of the staff until such time as another suitable teacher is available. In view of our experience, it is suggested that the teachers of secondary schools be declared members of an essential profession.” The chairman, Mr W. R. Nicol, was deputed to visit Wellington and place the matter before the Minister, through the member for Masterton, Mr J. Robertson. ___________
