OBITUARY

MR G. GODFREY TAYLOR. The death took place suddenly at Pahiatua late last night of Mr G. Godfrey Taylor, a well known accountant and dairy company secretary, at the age of 72 years. Deceased suffered an attack of influenza during a visit to Wellington where he was attending Synod as Vicar’s Warden, and recovered sufficiently to return home last evening, but a few hours afterwards suffered a collapse. x He was born in Swansea, Wales, and came to New Zealand about 50 years' ago. His first position was on the clerical staff of the Wairarapa Farmers’ Cooperative Association. Ltd., and shortly afterwards he was appointed secretary of the firm’s Carterton branch and from there, about 40 years ago, he moved to Pahiatua where he became secretary of a number of dairy companies which he held up to the time of his death. He took a prominent part in the town’s activities and was chairman of the Pahiatua High School Committee. Deceased was a member of the Druids’ and Foresters’ lodges and took a very keen interest in Friendly Society matters, being a member of the Wairarapa Friendly Societies Hospital Association and Council. Mr Taylor was instrumental in. raising a fund for the purchase of a Bren gun carrier, which, on behalf of the Pahiatua residents he handed over to the Minister of Defence at a special ceremony held in Wellington recently. He is survived by a widow, eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs J. Brown, of Masterton, and formerly of Carterton, and a family of four sons (Messrs George and Hugh, of Wellington. Don, Waipukurau, and Richard, Pahiatua) and three daughters (Mrs W. D. Harris and Mrs H. Bryant, Ruawhata. and Mrs T. Verry, Coonoor) who will have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their sudden bereavement. The funeral will take place at St. Peter’s Church, Pahiatua, on Monday, at 2.30 p.m.
