SUNDAY ENTERTAINMENT
FOR ARMED FORCES. REGULATIONS GAZETTED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. Authority for the holding of Sunday entertainments in - New Zealand for members of the armed forces and their friends is contained in regulations gazetted yesterday. The Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Parry, said that the regulation provided that Sunday entertainment and functions at which charges could be made might be held only with the written consent of the mayor as chairman of the local authority of the district in which the function or entertainment was held. Provision was made that in all cases the local patriotic organisation should be consulted, and the mayor or chairman was required to take into consideration any representations made by the patriotic organisation. Mr Parry said the Government had given very careful consideration to this difficult problem of providing Sunday entertainment for men of the fighting forces and had given due regard to the opinions expressed by various sections of the community. It had become very evident that something had to be done for the entertainment of members of the forces who were on leave on Sundays, but who had no organised entertainments to which they and their friends could go. The mayor or chairman could refuse his consent to any proposed entertainment, or grant consent to an application wholly or partly, and either unconditionally or subject to such terms and conditions as he might think fit. The provisions of the Police Offences Act as to penalties for Sunday trading had no application to any person working in relation to an entertainment authorised under the regulations.
