COUNTY AFFAIRS

SOUTH WAIRARAPA MEETING OF COUNCIL. ALLOWANCE TO HOME GUARDSMEN. (“Times-Age” Special.) Cr. F. Court presided over the monthly meeting of the South Wairarapa County Council held yesterday. There were also present Crs. A. E. Reid, A. McGregor, C. A. Cameron, Jas. Strang, E. W. Allen, R. O. Rayner, L. S. Gallon and M. McGregor. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £2271. The chairman’s action in appointing Mr H. J. McKenzie as overseer for the erection of chimneys in the Wairarapa South County, was endorsed. It was agreed to pay equally with the Carterton Borough Council up to 2d per mile to those Home Guardsmen travelling over five miles to parades, provided the cars carry full loads. It was resolved that the rates as advertised in the “Times-Age” be struck for the current year. Councillors F. Court, A. E. Reid and R. O. Rayner were appointed a committee to confer with Mr Smart, secretary of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society, in reference to the County Offices in 'the Society’s building in Broadway. It was resolved to fill up the road to the roadman's cottage at Gladstone and to put the cottage on a higher foundation.

Cr. A. McGregor and the overseer were appointed to go into the question of repairs to the Tyneside cottage, with power to act. It was decided that a 2-foot culvert be put in on Cobden Road near Mr Garrett’s property.
