IMPROVEMENT SEEN
IN THE PACIFIC OUTLOOK
PROSPECTS OF OFFENSIVE ACTION. LONDON PAPER’S COMMENT. LONDON, July 23. The “Daily Telegraph,” in an editorial referring to the conference between Mr Peter Fraser, Mr J. Curtin, and General MacArthur, says, ‘‘lt is well understood throughout the Allied countries that Australia and New Zealand are menaced as long as Japan holds bases near their shores. Yet there is solid ground for the confidence which Mr Curtin has recently avowed, and for Dr. Evatt’s judgment that the Pacific situation has materially improved in the past three or four months.” The editorial recalls Mr Churchill’s declaration that “the watchword is now ‘attack,’” and it concludes, “Japan must be expected to attempt an anticipation of any forward movement, but the challenge in the Pacific now comes not from the Tokio war lords but from the central direction of the strength of the United Nations.”
