S. MATTHEW’S CHURCH

REBUILDING SCHEME CAMPAIGN TO BE LAUNCHED. TO RAISE £12,000 BY DIRECT GIVING. A very well attended and enthusiastic meeting of parishioners was held in St. Matthew’s Hall last night to discuss the situation which had arisen, through the destruction of St. Matthew’s Church in the recent earthquake. The Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich, who presided, spoke of all that the beloved old church had meant in the life of the parish, and of the splendid spirit of the members of the church in face of the terrible calamity which had befallen them. On the motion of the Churchwardens, Messrs J. Ninnes and P. G. Ramsay, it was resolved unanimously to launch forthwith a campaign to raise £12,000 by direct giving for the erection of a new church and vicarage. Many donations have already been received by Archdeacon Rich, and the sympathy of the community will be with parishioners in their big task of building a new church which will be worthy of Masterton.
