Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral and Lady Newall left Wellington today for the Wanganui district. Their Excellencies will return to Wellington on Monday. Mr and Mrs G. B. Burgess, Masterton, announce the engagement of their eldest daughter, Nora Ngaire, to Henry Wilford, only son of Mrs L. F. Davis, Hastings. Mrs M. Stimpson, 89 Villa Street, Masterton, has received advice that her son, Pte. H. A. Stimpson, has been wounded and is seriously ill, an amputation of the left arm having been necessary. Mr G. A. Monk, Reikorangi, was appointed vice-president of the New Zealand Counties’ Association at a recent meeting of the executive. Mi’ J. D. Carruthers, Hamua, Pahiatua, was appointed to the executive. The death is reported from Auckland of Mr Charles Vince Houghton, in his eighty-sixth year. With one short interval, Mr Houghton was associated with the business life of Auckland for 70 years, including 36 years as local manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company and 37 years as a director of the New Zealand Insurance Company. The death occurred suddenly yesterday of Mr Lionel Samuel Stevens, a well-known citizen of Napier. Mr Stevens, who had been associated with the firm of Stevens and Sons, Napier, since its establishment in 1904, was the son pf the late Mr Q. R. Stevens. He was a prominent member of the Brethren in Napier and took an active part in the affairs of that church. News has been received from London of the death of Commander E. K. H. St. Aubyn, D.S.C., R.N., formerly on the staff at the Navy Office, Wellington. His many friends in New Zealand will learn with deep regret that he was killed'in action in the Battle of the Java Sea. Commander St. Aubyn. who was awarded the D.S.C. as a midshipman for service in action at the Dardenelles, left Wellington in the latter part of 1940 to take up an appointment on the staff at Singapore.

Mr Alex. Gordon, of Hamilton, was re-elected Dominion president of the New Zealand National Party at. the annual conference of the party, which concluded in Wellington yesterday. Mr Gordon was elected without opposition, having been nominated by all five divisions of the party. This is his third term of office. The following vice-presidents were elected: — Messrs G. M. Smith (Auckland), W. A. Clark (South Auckland), C. W. D. Bell (Wellington), G. H. Grigg (Canterbury), and G. W. Lane (OtagoSoulhland); women vice-presidents, Mrs V. Wilson (Opotiki) and Mrs Jack Acland (Temuka).
