GREYTOWN

RED CROSS SOCIETY EXECUTIVE MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) At a meeting of the executive of the Red Cross Society held in the Red Cross rooms last night, Mr A. W. Horton occupied the chair. Apologies for absence were received from Mr and Mrs J. F. Thompson and Mrs W. J. Knell. It was decided that a letter of thanks be sent to Miss Keddell in appreciation of the good work carried out by her in connection with the Junior Red Cross while in Greytown. Letters of thanks are to be sent to the Wairarapa Centre and the Wellington Headquarters for telegrams received at the time of the earthquake. The name of Mr Roygard, of Masterton, who is now a prisoner of war, is to be placed on the Greytown list, as his wife now resides in Greytown. It was reported that V.A’s. were required for kitchen work in the military hospital at Featherston.

CROQUET CLUB ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS. The annual meeting of the Greytown Croquet Club was held yesterday afternoon at the residence of Mrs H. G. Carter, McMaster Street. The annual report, which was read by Mrs A. Haigh, secretary, disclosed that the membership had grown during the past season as well as the honorary membership. The balance sheet which was submitted by Mrs A. Gregor, showed that the finances of the club were in a satisfactory state. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: Patroness, Miss Udy; president, Mrs H. G. Carter; vice-presidents, Mesdames A. W. Horton, F. Nichols and J. Reid; secretary, Mrs A. Haigh’; treasurer, Mrs A. Gregor; general committee, all members; match committee, Mesdames Gregor, Brunton, Reid, Nichols and Maddison; tea convenor, Mrs Brunton; delegate to the Wairarapa Association meeting, Mrs H. G. Carter, who is to be accompanied by Mrs A. Haigh. Afternoon tea was supplied by the members. Mrs Haigh thanked Mrs Carter for the use of her home for the meeting. i Fire at Whare. The Greytown Fire Brigade received a call at 9.30 o’clock this morning to a whare on the property of Mr H. L. Gray, Papawai Road. The outbreak was due to a faulty iron chimney. Only minor damage was done to the walls and roof. TOWN HALL “BACK IN THE SADDLE.” Tomorrow night there will be presented “Back in the Saddle” starring Gene Autry “Back in the Saddle” has a star-studded cast of popular Hollywood names including Edward Norris, famous for his “They Wont Forget” characterisation, Jacqueline Wells.
