DANGEROUS BREAK

ON SOUTHERN FRONT RED ARMY FALLING BACK. BUT GAINS AT VORONEZH MAINTAINED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.10 a.m.) RUGBY, July 21. The latest Moscow Press messages report that German forces in the south have broken through in a dangerous sector, after rolling,up part of the Soviet left flank. The Red Army is falling back here and in other sectors of the front. Southeast of Voroshilovgrad German tanks and aircraft are making attack after attack but the Russians continue to conduct a stubborn defence. Near Voronezh, the Soviet armies, it it reported, have cut one of the main strategic highways and thrust in behind the Germans and all efforts to regain the foothold which the Russians wrenched from The German forces on the left bank of the Don yesterday have broken down. The Russians have crossed to the right bank. The operations at Voronezh are thus officially described: “Soviet troops continued to deal the enemy heavy blows, inflicting heavy losses and destroying several, crossings over the Don. All attempts to retake the lost positions were repelled, the enemy losing 700 killed in these engagements. All enemy attempts to hold favourable positions on the eastern bank of the Don have failed. A tank battle of very great intensity occurred between the two rivers, where our men drove a wedge into the enemy positiofls. A fierce engagement took place in the enemy rear, which grew in intensity on Monday. In one sector south of Voronezh, a Soviet unit, during the night, crossed the river by swimming. The operation was successfully carried out and as a result the Germans, fearing they would be cut off from their main forces, fled from the western bank.”

NAZI COUNTER-ATTACKS IN VORONEZH AREA. BREACH WIDENED BY RED ARMY. (Received This Day, 10.0 a.m. ). LONDON, July 21. The Moscow radio quotes the “Pravda” as saying: “In an attempt to restore positions to the north-west and south of Voronezh, the Germans are making desperate but futile counterattacks, at enormous cost in men ana material. The Red Army north-west of Voronezh has already widened the breach, endangered further enemy strategic positions and secured operational freedom. The Russian advance was so swift that the Germans had no time to dig in and were unable to withstand the Russian bayonet charges. The Germans are now believed to be concentrating their main tank panzer formations southward of Voronezh.
