ATTACK ON GERMANY
URGED BV INTERNATIONAL WRITER DECISIVE VALUE OF AIR WEAPON. SUBORDINATION OF NAVAL POWER. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, July 20. A new book, “The Coming Battle of Germany,” by William Ziff, a prominent writer on international affairs, presents an extraordinary case for an immediate attack for the conquest of Germany. The author contends: “The one road that is open to us for striking at the heart of the Axis is through the air. Here, alone, we outmatch the Germans in the decisive theatre of operations. The existence of the British Isles as an advance base only a few hundred miles away possesses such favourable implications that they have not been generally grasped. Indeed, they are ignored by those pressing for second fronts in the sense of land invasions.”
The author pays a tribute to the skill, magnificent strategy and courage of the Royal Air Force in the Battle for Britain, which, he says, proved conclusively that air power alone can be the decisive factor. Had the Luftwaffe conquered the R.A.F. Hitler would have bestrode everything. The author says: “The navies are now in the throes of the greatest revolutionary ferment in their history. The task of the fighting ship is now largely restricted to convoys beyond the range of shorebased aeroplanes, and as the latter’s radius develops they will conceivably drive sea power under the water altogether.” The author stresses the striking importance of Pearl Harbour. For the first time, he says, naval power is deliberately used as an auxiliary to air power. The unqualified superiority of the land-based aeroplane as an instrument of battle was unmistakably shown in the battles of Midway Island and the Coral Sea, where the aircraftcarriers themselves were as vulnerable as any other vessel to attack from the skies.
