NAVAL CLASH

GERMAN SQUADRON ATTACKED IN CHANNEL NUMBER OF ENEMY SHIPS DAMAGED. BRITISH GUNBOAT LOST. LONDON, July 21. A small patrol of British light coastal craft engaged a German force of armed trawlers and other ships in the Channel. The patrol attacked and set one of the enemy trawlers on fire. The other enemy ships, including a supply-ship were hit many times. A British gunboat was hit and set on fire and must be considered lost. An Admiralty communique gives further details. The action occurred off Cap Gris Nez. A strong enemy force of armed trawlers and powerfully-arm-ed flak ships was found covering the passage of a supply ship creeping up channel close to the enemy’s coast. “Despite a great disparity of force,” the communique states, “our patrol immediately attacked. A somewhat confused action followed, in which one enemy trawler was set heavily on fire and other enemy ships, including the supply-ship, sustained a large number of hits, with the result that the enemy abandoned his intention of proceeding up Channel, turned back and sought shelter in harbour. One of our motor boats was heavily hit and set on fire, and must be considered lost. The remainder of our patrol safely returned to its base.”
