Damage to the bottle store, cloakroom and walls of the malthouse of New Zealand Breweries Ltd., Murphy Street, Wellington, was caused by a fire of unknown origin in the early hours of Saturday morning. The firemen found that the fire had begun in the men’s cloakroom, which is underneath the bottle store and adjacent to the malthouse.
Price of Eggs. The Wellington Egg Marketing Committee and the Internal Marketing Division, working in conjunction with the Price Tribunal, have arranged for a decrease in the wholesale price of eggs. The new prices, which are effective from today, are as follows, with previous prices shown in parentheses:—Heavy, 3s (3s 3d) dozen; standard, 2s lOd (3s Id); medium, 2s 8d (2slOd); pullet, 2s 4d (2s 6d); large duck, 2s lOd (3s Id); small duck, 2s 8d (2s lOd). Authorised receiving depots will pay 2s 81d a dozen for ungraded eggs. Landslips at Oriental Bay. Large masses of rotten rock fell from the cliff face of Fitzgerald Point, Oriental Parade, Wellington, on Saturday morning. The heavy rain which fell throughout the morning converted the soft spoil into a stream of thick yellow slush. The properties invaded by the slip arc No. 170 (owned by Mr T. A. Wells) and Nos. 168 and 166, semi-de-tached one-storied wooden cottages owned by Mr John Cameron, formerly of Masterton. The veranda at the rear of No. 168 has been crushed in, and the backyard is filled with a big slanting pile of rotten rock. There are two theories as to the immediate cause of the slip. One is that the existing face may have become disturbed by the big earthquake, creating cracks for the admission of water during last week’s heavy weather. Another theory is that, contrary to a fairly general belief, the planting of shrubs and trees cm an almost vertical cutting is creating trouble for future generations.
