P. AND A. SOCIETY
GENERAL COMMITTEE MEETING AT CARTERTON. EARTHQUAKE DAMAGE. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr J. A. McLeod presided over a meeting of the general committee of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society held at Carterton on Saturday. The chairman referred to the deaths of Mrs S. Cundy, and of Pte. P. McGillicuddy, the latter having been killed in action in Egypt. Members stood in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect to their memory. The secretary was instructed to forward letters of sympathy to the relatives of the deceased. The treasurer’s statement showed a credit balance of £206 13s 3d. The Dannevirke A. and P. Association wrote stating that no show would be held this year, but that a lam fair would be held on February 2, 1943. The grounds committee reported that three chimneys on buildings on the Showgrounds had suffered earthquake damage, and that the eastern side of the memorial gates had been badly crashed. A report on the Society s offices, Memorial Square, had been obtained from Mr Raymond Lee, Masterton, who recommended that the building be reduced to a one floor structure. In its present state it was quite safe for oc cupation. A further expert opinion was obtained and this stated that the building was quite safe for occupation for ground floor tenants. It was stated that the top storey could be strengthened by removing the outside wall or bricks and erecting a wooden top storey. " It was resolved that arrangements be made for the western wall to be made weather proof in the meantime.
