PIRINOA

ROUGH WEATHER MUCH LAND FLOODED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The weather was extremely boisterous during the week. Snow and hail fell continuously on Thursday and it was not long before the hills were white with snow. The atmosphere was exceptionally severe. Large patches of land are under water, and in the Tuhitarata area the river overflowed its banks and several residents had to vacate their homes. The main road was impassble for a few days and it is now negotiable but some care must be taken. It is not known yet whether there was any loss of stock. The Te Hopai property of Mr Holmes seems to have had more than its share of flood waters. Personal Items. The death occurred recently of Mrs Harvey, wife of Mr T. Harvey, Dry River, Martinborough. She was the mother of Miss C. Harvey, head teacher of the local school. One of her sons is Judge Harvey, of the Native Land Court, Rotorua. At a meeting of the local school committee, the secretary was instructed to convey a message of condolence to Miss Harvey, who is at present on sick leave. Miss Bessie Carter has returned to Napier after having spent the midwinter vacation with her parents. It was with profound regret that the news of the death in action of Lieutenant Colonel Te Whiti Love was received by the Maoris of this district, and indeed by the whole of the Maori people in the Wairarapa. He was well known here, particularly in connection with the Native Land Court, of which he was clerk and interpreter for some years on the Wairarapa circuit. He was a capable and courteous official. Mr and Mrs J. McLean, who, have been visiting friends in this distiict, have left on their return to Gisborne. A start was made on Friday repairing the earthquake damaged chimneys at the Pirinoa Post Office.
