* — TEMP.-MAJOR E. CHESTERMAN BRILLIANT CAREER CUT SHORT. OLD BOY OF WAIRARAPA HIGH SCHOOL. Official advice has been received by Mr and Mrs H. J. Chesterman, of Masterton, that their son, Temporary Major E. R. Chesterman, serving with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force overseas, has been killed in action. The death of Temporary Major Chesterman, who had a brilliant scholastic career and figured prominently in sport, will be deeply regretted. He was dffx of Lansdowne School and of Wairarapa High School. At the latter school he was also head prefect and was captain of the First Fifteen and of the First Eleven. He won the Daniell Essay prize for two years in succession. He gained both a junior and a senior university scholarship and took his M.A. degree at Victoria University College. As a boy, Temporary Major Chesterman was employed for a time on the night staff of the “Wairarapa Age.” In the field of sport, Temporary Major Chesterman won many distinctions. He played Rugby for the Victoria College senior team when it won the Wellington championship, he was an Otago representative when that province won the Ranfurly Shield in 1937 and. he was a member of the Southland team which met the Springboks during their tour of New Zealand. At the Wellington secondary schools’ athletic meeting he won the 440 yards championship. He toured Japan with the New Zealand University team in 1935-36. Temporary Major Chesterman also took an interest in flying and while residing in Nelson he secured his A licence as a member of the Nelson-Marlborough Aero Club. Enlisting shortly after the outbreak of war, he proceeded overseas with the Third Echelon and was wounded in one of the earlier Libyan battles.
