LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

MONTHLY MEETING. Mrs R. H. Every presided over a good attendance of members and friends at the monthly meeting of the League of Mothers. Mrs Williams gave, the thought: “Journeying through the year, Speak with kindness, cause no tears, Do some good along the way, Do a little every day.” The president invited members to send nominations for the committee to the secretary by the end of the month. Mrs Every announced that the church parade would be held at St. Mark’s Church on Sunday. Two solos by Mrs Ardrey were great-' ly appreciated, Mrs Vaughan being the accompaniste. An admission service was held, three new members being enrolled. Mrs Every welcomed the Rev. Knowles Smith, who gave a most interesting address on “Pictures.” He related several incidents that had come to his knowledge, which were directly attributable to the wrong type of picture being displayed. To combat this, he urged his listeners to endeavour to teach their children a love of nature and an appreciation of the beautiful by adorning their walls with carefully chosen pictures. In the course of his remarks, the speaker related some very humorous stories, which were thoroughly enjoyed by members. ■ Church Service. A Church of England service will be held at Longbush at 2.30 p.m. on Sunday. An Earthquake Happening. One of the outstanding happenings in the Featherston Borough, in which all chimneys are down, as the result of the recent earthquake disaster, was the jolting of the Soldiers’ Monument in the cemetery to such an extent that instead of facing to the north-east it now has its frontage to the east. Hot Water Units. At yesterday’s meeting of the Wairarapa Power Board when hire purchase agreements were being dealt with, Mr Colquhoun referred to the fact that the Board had previously “boosted" hot water units and that through the overloading of the current the use of these had been restricted. “We are still asked to conserve power and in spite of this we go on installing ranges,” he said. “In the circumstances I desire to again enter my protest. I think the Board should go steady for a time until it is in a position to cater for further installations.” The secretary-manager said that, many of the present agreements had been made because people were without heating owing to the earthquake. When the present stock of ranges became exhausted they would not be able to get any more until after the war. Hockey. The Carterton senior ladies team to play Excelsior at Masterton will be: T. Compton, M. Parker, K. Te Tau, B. Malcolm, V. Ward, Z. Ward, I. Parker, F. Jensen, A. Scott, Mrs Playle and another. Personal. His wife is residing in Auckland. Sergeant Abbott’s father (“Bunny” Abbott) was a former Taranaki and New Zealand representative Rugb player, having been a member of the All Blacks, in 1905-6. Another Waipukurau family very prominent in Hawek’s Bay Rugby circles received similar fateful news at the weekend, Private G. R. Geenty having made the supreme sacrifice on June 27. Two of his brothers, Lance-Corporal D. R. Geenty and Private K. B. Geenty are prisoners of war. Mi’ Joseph Grant, one of the oldest of the first generation of Gladstoneborn settlers, dating back to the early 60’s, is at present seriously ill in the Palmerston North Hospital. For over 20 years Mr Grant has been a resident of the Otaki district.. Sgt. Pilot Trangmar was entertained at a social gathering last night.
