CARTERTON
* REMOVAL OF, SIGNPOSTS TO BE. CARRIED OUT. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeeting of the executive committee of the Wairarapa Automobile Association it was decided that with regard.to the question of removing signposts in the district to fall in with the request of the Military and co-operate with them and the Home Guard when conditions made their removal expedient. The chairman pointed out that the posts had cost the Association many hundreds of pounds, and if and when they were dismantled arrangements should be made to have the sign boards carefully stored in various convenient depots.—lt was resolved that the patrols arrange suitable depots in Pahiatua, Eketahuna, Masterton, Carterton, Greytown, Featherston and Martinborough.
FIRE BRIGADE ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade was held last evening, Superintendent C. J. Churchouse presiding over a good attendance of members. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs E. McKenzie and C. J. DeLacey. The balance sheet showed a credit balance of £l7. In moving its adoption the chairman congratulated the members on the keen interest they had taken in'brigade affairs during the year. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Superintendent, Mr C. J. Churchouse; deputy superintendent, Mr H. G. Steif art; foreman, Nir T. W. Lipinski; secretary and treasurer, Mr L. M. Clark; motorman, Mr H. M. Catt; Station officer, Mr T. D. Catt; auditor, H. M. B. Trapp; executive committee, Messrs R. F. Taucher, L. J. Berry, B. M. Catt. Mr R. Smith, who has been actively connected with the brigade for many years, was elected a life member. At the conclusion of the meeting a social gathering was held and several toasts proposed and replied to.
Personal items, Mrs H. H. L. Meyrick, of Frankton Junction, is the guest of Mrs W. Williams, Garrison Street. , Sergeant Pilot Trangmar will be en-' tertained at a social gathering in the Belvedere schoolroom tonight. Mr and Mrs AV. Martin, of Rexwood Street, have received advice that their son, Pte. James L. Martin, is missing. Pte. D. Miller, son of Mr and Mrs C. Miller, Carrington, was among those who recently returned from overseas, and is staying with his parents. Mrs W. E. Crawley, of Carterton, has received word that her husband, Pte. Crawley, has been wounded in battle in Egypt. Hockey. The Carterton junior A team to play Excelsior at Lansdowne on Saturday will be: —June Stevens, Rilma Hopkins, Audrey Williams, Ngarie Williams, Beryl Berry, Del Jensen, Dulcie George, Pat Jensen, Betty Parker, Beryl Matson, Lola Hopkins. Woman Injured. Miss Annie Humphries, while wheeling her cycle in north High Street this week, was knocked down by a motor car driven by Mr Hack, milkman. She received injuries to her head and face and was admitted to the Greytown Hospital for treatment. Fall From Horse. Mr J. Bambry, a very old resident of Dalefield, was much shaken and bruised last evening when the horse he was riding slipped and fell on the bitumen road opposite Mr C. Zillwood’s residence near the Maungatere bridge, throwing him to the ground. Case of Diphtheria. A case of diphtheria was admitted to» the Masterton Hospital this week from Carterton.
