OBITUARY MRS W. SHIRLEY. (“Times-Age” Special.) The death occurred suddenly this morning of Mrs Jane Sophia Shirley, wife of Mr William Shirley, of Lincoln Road, Carterton. The late Mrs Shirley was a wellknown and very highly respected resident and was esteemed by many friends, to whom her death will come as a great shock. Born at Picton in 1867, she lived there with her parents for many years. After her marriage, she and her husband, who survives her, lived in the Alfredton and Eketahuna districts for years. The whole of their family—four daughters and one son were born at Alfredton. They are: Mesdames G. Edwards, Auckland; R. A. Matthews, Dargaville; A. C. Caseley, Martinborough; A. R. Clark, Carterton, and Second Lieutenant A. T. (Bill) Shirley, of Whakatane. The funeral will be private. Social Gathering at Belvedere. Belvedere and district residents are I reminded of the social gathering to be I held in honour of Sgt. Pilot TrangI mar at the schoolhouse, Belvedere, tomorrow evening. Christmas Parcels. An appeal is being made to the' residents of Carterton and district to subscribe to the fund to provide parcels for soldiers overseas. These parcels will be packed and forwarded from Wellington and will be sent in time to reach them at Christmas. Salvation Army Cadets. The Salvation Army College Cadets will visit Carterton on Saturday and Sunday. They will commence _ their engagements at Carterton with a series of open-air meetings on Saturday afternoon. In the evening they will render items at a social gathering in the Salvation Army Barracks for which a charge of one shilling will be made for admission. On the Sunday they will lead and speak at the services at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. The afternoon gathering, which is described as a “free and easy meeting,” should appeal to all. The services will be held in the Salvation Army Hall. Personal Items. Mrs A. Burrows, Tyneside, Te Wharau, has received the following telegraphic message from the Hon F. Jones, Minister of Defence: “Regret a further cable reports that your son, Gunner Leslie Burrows, is now dangerously ill with multiple gunshot wounds.”
