OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
LIGHTING RESTRICTIONS (To the Editor.) Sir—Some time before the earthquake I noticed a correspondent appealing for a little less vigour in the enforcement of the brown-out in Masterton. At the time, although seeing clearly the need of such action, I did not bother to support his lone effort. But since the earthquake, when some extra effort is needed to assist the general public to overcome the nervousness that naturally follows such an upheaval, it becomes doubly necessary to let up in this over-zealous brown-out. But in case the Lighting Controller cannot see his way to ease the restrictions, let the powers that be restore the usual Friday night’s lighting and opening of the shops (within the ordinary lighting restrictions). Further I would suggest that the . shops kindly leave their windows lit up for half an hour after closing time, to assist the shopping public on their way home. Also it would be a gracious act during this disturbing period if those who conveniently can would light their windows every night for a couple of hours. At least let us get rid of panic signs and proceed with our ordinary Friday night's business.—l am. etc., COMMON SENSE. Masterton, July 15.
