COUNTY AFFAIRS
MAURICEVILLE COUNTY MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS. QUESTION OF HOSPITAL TAXATION. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held yesterday afternoon. The chairman. Mr E. W. Cheetham, presided, and there were also present Councillors A. Gray. D. Bennett and O. Welch. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors J. H. MacDonald and A. Forsberg. The treasurer’s report, which showed a credit balftnce if £235 8s 6d, was adopted. The chairman reported that the Main Highways Council had considered the council’s estimates for the current year, and that a reduction of 30 per cent, in the allocation had been made. A letter was received from the Wairarapa Hospital Board acknowledging the County Council’s protest against the heavy annual levy made on the Council thi? year, it being pointed out that the Board was taking up the matter of hospital taxation with the Director General of Health. A letter was received from the Treasury regarding arrangements that had been made with local authorities in connection with a survey of essential repairs made necessary by the recent earthquake, and advising the council of the steps to be taken in regard to payment for work done. It was reported to the council that many slips were coming down on the county roads owing to the heavy rain and flooding throughout the district. A general survey of the position would be made as soon as conditions permit.
