DESERT ROAD

GREAT TRANSPORT LINK IN AUSTRALIA. THROUGH HEART OF CONTINENT. (Special Australian Correspondent.) SYDNEY, July 13. Australia’s northern highway, linking the centres of the south with the operational bases of the north and running through the heart of the continent, is the greatest road transport link in the world. This is the opinion of the senior officer commanding convoy forces in Australia. Since the establishment of the convoy headquarters in September, 1940, more than 15,000,000 road miles havebeen travelled and only five fatalities have occurred. Tyre replacements in -five months have cost £80,000; worn tyres are sent south to be reclaimed as salvaged rubber. The cost of operating the road has fallen from 7d per ton mile in the first days to just over 3d.
