GREATER EFFORT
DEMANDED IN AUSTRALIA. MASS MEETING OF MUNITION WORKERS. (Special Australian- Correspondent.) MELBOURNE, July 13. More than 3000 munition workers, at a mass meeting, protested against “departmental inefficiency and bungling.” A representative of the workers said that they had met with many difficulties in their efforts to introduce a 100 per cent war effort in certain factories. The abolition of Sunday work_ in some factories had meant a reduction in the men’s weekly production hours from 48 to 40. The meeting received messages from the Prime Minister, Mr Curtin, and members of the War Cabinet. A resolution was carried declaring “complete support for the Labour Government.” The meeting also requested that the Government should appoint a select committee to investigate the management and conduct of munitions establishments. Before the meeting, union members held a demonstration march, carrying banners bearing inscriptions' such as “Idle machines help Hitler. Abolish red tape and win the war.”
