NEW CHECK=UP

ON AUSTRIANS & GERMANS IN BRITAIN. SOME ENGAGED IN SHADY BUSINESS. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, July 7. A new police check-up has been begun on those Austrians and Germans who have been reported to be engaged in shady business while enjoying British freedom. _ There are 60,000 Austrians and Germans~in Britain, of whom 56,000 fled before the war from the Gestapo. Many hold lucrative positions; for example, a chemist earning £l2OO a year, a factory manager on £7OO a year, and skilled war workers on £l2 a week. Most of these are loyal to Britain and anxious to beat the Axis, but a minority, taking advantage of war conditions, have caused the police trouble. Some have already been interned at the request of refugee committees.
