ASSAULT IN FIJI
SENTENCES ON NEW ZEALAND SOLDIERS. 5 CASE A VERY SERIOUS ONE. A plea on behalf of three New Zealand soldiers who were sentenced to five years’ imprisonment on conviction of assault in Fiji was made by Mr Wilkinson (Independent, Egmont). He asked the Minister of Justice, Mr Mason, if he would intercede in the case. Through the good offices of the Prime Minister, continued Mr Wilkinson, the men had teen returned to New Zealand and he understood two were being released from prison. He asked that the same clemency be extended to the third man. Several members interjected, saying the assault was cowardly and brutal. The Minister said the case had been a very serious one. The Prisons Board had given earnest consideration to the position of the three men and in respect of two of them had fixed a date for their release. No decision had been arrived at concerning the other man.
