FRENCH BUY GERMAN NEWSPAPER. Germans in . France were recentl? surprised that everyone was trying to buy copies of a German newspaper. This looked like sudden and unexpected display of good feeling towards the Germans, but its suddenness made itsuspicious. The French were buying a German newspaper containing a photograph showing Marshal Petain, with a smile on his face, shaking hands with one of France’s arch-enemies —a photograph which had been carefully kept out of the French newspapers.
