BOXING IN EGYPT

MAADI CAMP CHAMPIONSHIPS. SOME WILLING DISPLAYS. (N.Z.E.F. Official News Service.) . CAIRO, April 16. Fighting was willing but the standard of boxing not very high at the Maadi Camp Boxing Championships, held last night. In several bouts experienced fighters met little opposition and were not seen at their best. The trophy for the most scientific boxer went to W. Jarvis, the Christchurch bantamweight, whose lightning left and clever footwork gave him an easy victory over his opponent, G. A. Clark. A trophy for the gamest fighter, donated by W.0.1. J. C. Nesfield, was won by A. D. Rockell. who gave a display of dogged courage in the light-heavy-weight semi-final which he lost to A. J. R. Anderson, of Invercargill. In the final of this weight, Anderson had a narrow points win over K. Wright, in one of the best fights of the evening. P. G. Hawes, of Christchurch, gave a good exhibition to win the featherweight final, being too experienced for O. H. Nicholas. He won on a t.k.o. in the third round. The veteran Clarrie Marshall, of Gisborne, met a game youngster, S. C. Evans, in the welterweight final, and did not come off unscathed. Evans fought back in the last round, after taking counts of eight and four in the second. Trophies were presented by Colonel G. J. McNaught. Results were: — Bantamweight: W. Jarvis (8.5) beat G. A.
