MASTERTON RENTALS

CHARGES FOR TEMPORARY ? ACCOMMODATION ATTORNEY-GENERAL DEFINES POSITION. SPIRIT OF CO-OPERATION. The position regarding tenancies covering temporary premises in Masterton is defined by the Attorney-Gener-al, Mr H. G. R. Mason, in a letter to Mr J. Robertson, Member for Masterton. The Ministei 1 made the following statement: “I note the difficulty that is said to be arising in respect of tenancies of business premises by reason of the destruction wrought by the recent earthquake. As I have orally mentioned to you, when a calamity such as that falls upon a community there is a general disposition on the part of all to help one another and I am sure that that disposition will not be lacking in Masterton. I am sure that feeling will govern landlords and tenants in their relationships in adjusting all difficulties that have arisen out of the disturbance of the earthquake and in respect of all accommodation that may be necessary for temporary arrangements. It is in my opinion much better that all these troubles should be adjusted through the medium of that spirit of co-operation and such a result is likely to give far more satisfaction than the enactment of regulations. If. however, there are those, who, moved by a different spirit, are adamant in using the present crisis oppressively to take advantage of the necessities of those whose accommodation has been interfered with, then the Government will not hesitate immediately to take action to prevent it and any action taken would, of course, authorise the re-examination of arrangements made under oppressive circumstances between the time of the earthquake and the measures taken by the Government.”
