VITAL STATISTICS ' FIGURES FOR JUNE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The vital statistics for June are as follow:—Births, 8; marriages, 3; deaths, 1. During the quarter ended June 30, 24 births, 12 marriages, and 6 deaths were registered. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE' DALEFIELD-MATARAWA. The monthly meeting of the Dale-field-Matarawa Women’s Institute was held in the Matarawa School and was presided over by Mrs W. Nielsen. Mrs Williams and Mrs Denby gave a most instructive demonstration on quilt making. A roll call “What we did while the earthquake was on,” caused much amusement. The competitions resulted as follows: —Seniors: Fruit cake: Mrs 0. Brazendale 1, Mrs E. Smith 2, Mrs G. Sadler 3. Three shrubs: Mrs G. Couper 1, Mrs W. Knowles 2, Mrs Meyrick 3. Juniors: Fruit cake: Beth Sadler 1, Jean Conwell 2, Joyce Goodin 3. Three shrubs: Joyce Goodin 1, Beth Sadler 2. One new member was welcomed. Rainfall at Carrington, Mr J. A. Roberts, of Carrington, reports that in June, 121 points of rain were registered. ■ There were 9 wet days and the heaviest fall, .35, on June 1. The rainfall in June, 1941, was 5.19 inches. Instruction in Shooting. Last evening Messrs C. J. DeLacey, Gordon Goodin and R. A. Copeland gave instruction to a number of soldiers in miniature rifle shooting, the object being to train the men as snipers. These instruction classes will be held twice a week. Personal Items. Cpl. Fred Hill, a son of Mr and Mrs S. Hill, and Able Seaman Altin Roydhouse, son of Mr and Mrs R. W. Roydhouse, were the recipients of presentations from the citizens of Carterton prior to their departure to rejoin their services. The presentations were made by the Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner. Mrs FI. Hodder, on behalf of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, presented each with woollen comforts. School Committee. The monthly meeting of the Carterton District High School Committee will be held on Monday evening. The voting papers for the election of a representative on the Wellington Education Board for the Wairarapa Ward have been distributed. The candidates are Messrs H. J. McKenzie, Carterton, and Col. McDonald, Wellington.
